NY 2010

I can't believe it's 2010 but I feel really optimistic and keen to start this year.

I delayed my January 1st give away knowing that most of us were probably
recovering and laying low so here we go.

To begin the year I'd like to offer my Buy Local Calendar. All you have to do is
post a comment below on which your favorite month of the year is for local
produce and the winner will be picked one week from today.

  1. I love July, when we have lots of options at the farmers' market...when the farmers' market begins in town. It's so hard to wait through June!

  2. Happy New Year! It's a tough call, but I think May is my fave, when it still surprises me that things are actually growing and available locally, already.

  3. We live in Alaska, where the produce really starts rolling in June -- lots of greens, and the "basil lady" has gobs of many wonderful, fragrant herbs.

  4. I must say it's a 50/50 split between April with Rhubarb and August with tomatoes! Both very happy things to look forward to!!!

  5. I have to say June since that's the month our local CSA begins, and the first week always brings a pint of strawberries!

  6. My birthday is in early July, and when I was young in Seattle my dad would make ears upon ears of fresh, wonderful sweet corn for dinner on my birthday. As a result, I have a permanent, happy association between July and sweet corn. Doesn't get much better than a warm evening and the burst of fresh corn off the cob!

  7. I'd have to say June, because that's when you can start buying Irish strawberries from roadside stands.

  8. I have to say August when my Mom's garden gets really going. Then we have tomatoes, and the grapes just smell better and better. But it's also nice when the herbs start perking up in May or June, depending on the cold.

  9. October is a wonderful month in the garden...I love the fall greens, the swiss chard and some wonderful opportunities to decorate with gourds and pumpkins....there is a nip in the air and some great scenery with all the wonderful colors.

  10. I vote for May, before the summer heat sets in. It's all about the tomatoes and basil.

  11. Definitely April. Digging up overwintered sunchokes, getting wild onions by the roadside, and watching the tiny sprouts of everything to come!

  12. October, bar none. I live in Western Mass, where that is the season of plenty!!

  13. I have to agree with musicadolce0004-- a recent transplant from Western Mass to Portland, OR, October was and still is my favorite month for produce: squash, pumpkin, chard, kale, yum! Here in Portland we get all these goodies, plus we're still in apple and pear season. Oh, and chestnuts. And cranberries. And what else did I forget?

  14. For me it would have to be late October. The gourds are beautiful and the variety amazing. The possibilities endless for hibernating through the winter.

  16. July is my favorite month for produce, because that's when all the pretty, multicolored tomatoes in our backyard are bursting with yumminess. Doesn't get any more local than that!

  17. Here in England June is the best month - local asparagus and strawberries are ready for their short season. So much better and tastier than the stuff imported from abroad.
