Brian Jungen

I've just returned from Washington DC where I spent a lovely 2 days
with my sister exploring the city. It was my first trip there and I feel
like I only just scraped the surface with it's wonderful museums and
historic monuments. The National Museum of the American Indian really
blew me away from the exterior to the amazing collection within.

The art of Brian Jungen is one of the most innovative and clever works
I have seen in a very long time. He is a Canadian artist from British Colombia
with Swiss and Dunne-za First Nations ancestry. He draws upon the traditions
of "found art" and incorporates familiar everyday items into traditional
First Nations artwork.
Jungen writes:
"It was interesting to see how by simply manipulating the Air Jordan shoes
you could evoke specific cultural traditions whilst simultaneously amplifying
the process of cultural corruption and assimilation.
The Nike mask sculptures seemed to articulate a paradoxical relationship
between a consumerist artefact and an 'authentic' native artifact."

Monsieur Cabinet

Dave aka Monsieur Cabinet lives and works in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
I came across his work when he was a contributor on Doodlers Anonymous.
His work will definitely make you giggle and I love his visual play on words.

Tanya Cooper

I came across Tanya Cooper the other day and was drawn to her
food illustrations. All I've been drawing for the past few weeks
is the fruit and vegetables for my calendar so it's nice to see
other illustrators approach to a similar subject.
She has many more examples on her site.

2010 Calendar

Finally I'm thrilled to reveal my 2010 calendar.
I've been feverishly drawing yummy fruits, vegetables and
other local delights for each month.
I'm finding as time goes by that I get such pleasure out of eating locally
and therefore seasonally and thought this would be a wonderful
subject for a calendar. Every month features the produce in season and
in January I will be featuring a guest blogger chef who will share
some local recipes. It's going to be an exciting project.
Meanwhile the calendar will be available November 1 from my shop.

Lizzy Stewart

It's been a while since I've featured an illustrator so today I'd like to introduce
Lizzy Stewart from Edinburgh. She loves pencils, Russian history and bears.
I really like her book "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and her beautiful representations
of the Native Americans.

Sneak Preview of 2010 Calendar

I've been busy creating a 2010 calendar which shows what delicious
produce is available locally on each month. This obviously depends
where you are located but for now I think I have the North East covered.
Beginning in January I will also have a guest chef post seasonal recipes
along with step by step illustrations by me.
Here's a compilation of some of the yummy treats so far.
I will post the final calendar on Friday.
